PARAMETERS 1.viii - NAME GAME

Room 219 was always on the other side of Earth to me. Separated by just a wall the window was always visible from our corridor verandah but to get to that room you have to go down the stairs cross the badminton court , enter from the backside entrance in the faculty quarter and then go up the same no. of stairs. It was pretty much hectic for me. But Abhishek had some kind of innocence in him that I liked and the heavy job never bothered me. It was a pleasure to visit his room. I really envied when I saw that big enough attached bathroom and the spacious room they got. But his room mates Tamul ( I am directly using the nickname because no one called him his real name for a day as I remember ) and another different stream guy was too boring. They were like the mannequins in the store. It felt terrible when I had to wait in his room if I found he had stepped outside. The only welcome gesture they showed was to open the door and let me sit on Abhishek's bed. They would engross themselves in doing whatever they were doing and would not say a single word. The answers they gave to me was in one or two words. These 2 would not talk among themselves also. Afterwards I realised that it was not that they did not like me , its because they were like that. These 2 fellows had lived in the same apartment in Patna and I had hardly felt that they know each other. I thought that I am the only introvert there in that college. It was really an encouraging confidence booster for me.

But spending time with Abhishek and helping him out with the surroundings was always very soothing for me. I always had an inferiority complex in my school and after meeting him I somehow saw my own reflection there (only from the complexity point of view) . He would do the stupidiest thing or discuss the most irrelevant topic and thereby getting a big chat ( a local 'college' term for the process of being made fun of ). He was improving with his complex issue. Our friendship became stronger and stronger.

He had completely understood the prank that was played on him on the first intro. He never had to fill the bottles apart from the first day but he really wanted to stay with us and wanted to be a part of us always. He knew that he lived in the extreme corner and separated zone ,  to which his room mates didn't have a problem. But he was regular in our rooms and therefore he dealt with patience whatever happened to him. And the guy who took the maximum advantage of that was Pande.

But we all knew that somehow we were connected by some invisible string. PENTACRUISE or the pact was lost but what remained was our friendship and the bonding. Abhishek was becoming very much more and more comfortable in playing pranks or irritating PINKY by calling out vulgur names and even by making a family tree of various names that FORA might keep in the upcoming generations. Abhishek started messing with Pande even.

The biggest weakness of Pande was he could not resist food and that you can make out by seeing him. He was a complete foodie and his favourite was Golbari's mutton chap/kosa. Priyankar told us that while returning home on weekends he would finish plates after plates and still not get satisfied with the quantity. Abhishek would make vulgar names of the food we got in canteen and would offer them to Pande verbally asking him whether he would like some. FOOD was Pande's greatest weakness. He was smart enough to catch that. Only that his qualities were submerged under a big thick layer of inferiority complex. What a monster I have created or rather awakened!!!

Abhishek gave many names to many people in the college. Some people he had named more than 2 times and he was good at that. He had  great contributions while naming Priyankar , Somen and me enormous number of times. PINKY otherwise would not have got more than 108 names without his presence.

But it would be marked in history that we could not give him a name as good as it was given by Sanu from our batch. Sanu was one guy we tried to avoid because of the political image he had. As if we were there for elections and not a B.TECH degree. I remember that day when Abhishek was late for the evening fall - in and was told to run 15 rounds of the basketball court as a punishment. He was running with his face lifted towards the sky , mouth open trying to inhale as much oxygen possible and Sanu named him 'HUBBA'. That "hubba" sometimes became "babba" but this was the only suitable name that was found for him. It was short and sweet with no vulgurity. Our parents even would call him by that name when he visited our house and that would make him  red with embarassment.

I don't recall that anybody had called him by his real name after that even by mistake. If someone does then it would be to make a fun of it.

With more and more confidence he would sometimes show his real inner self. His actions forced us to give him another name and this time we did it. He was called 'JUNGLEE' implying to his behaviourial characteristics. His excitements , excessive decibel limit of voice , and hitting while laughing ( the most wierd way to show happiness) terrified us. We would protect ourselves like the free kick wall before saying any humorous comment.

"HUBBA" was the name we used when we had serious discussions with him and we would refer to him as 'JUNGLEE' when we made fun of him.

P.S : Real Names can be changed depending upon the sensitivity of matter discussed.
